Head & Neck Muscles (Cranial Nerves) Flashcards
What is the pneumonic to remember the 12 cranial nerves?
Oh, Oh, Oh, To, Touch, And, Feel, Virgin, Girls, Vagina, And, Hymen
What is the pneumonic to remember whether the cranial nerve is motor, sensory, or both?
Some, Say, Marry, Money, But, My, Brother, Says, Big, Business, Makes, Money
What are the 12 cranial nerves?
Olfactory Optic Oculomotor Trochlear Trigeminal Abducens Facial Vestibulocochlear Glossopharyngeal Vagus (Spinal )Accessory Hypoglossal
What is the function of CN I?
Sensory
Conveys special sensory info relating to SMELL
What is the function of CN II?
Sensory
Conveys visual/sensory information from retina
What is the function of CN III?
Motor
Innervation of the eye muscles allowing movement and raising the eyelid
What is the function of CN IV?
Motor
Oblique movement of eyes
What is the function of CN V?
3 Branches separately
V1 - Ophthalmic: Sensory
- Sensation from cornea, skin of forehead, scalp, eyelids, nose, nasal cavity mucosa
V2 - Maxillary: Sensory
- Sensation from face over maxilla, upper lip, maxillary teeth (superior alveolar nerve)
V3 - Mandibular: Both
- Sensation of mandible, mandibular teeth (inferior alveolar nerve), mucosa of mouth and anterior 2/3 tongue sensation
- Motor movements include moving temporalis, masseter, orbicularis oris, buccinator, lateral and medial pterygoid
What is the function of CN VI?
Motor
Lateral movement of eye
What is the function of CN VII?
Both
Sensation of taste from anterior 2/3 of tongue
Motor movements include movement of facial expression muscles
What is the function of CN VIII?
Sensory
Transmits sound and equilibrium (balance) information from inner ear to the brain
What is the function of CN IX?
Both
Sensation of posterior 1/3 tongue (taste), tonsils, the pharynx, and the middle ear
Motor to stylopharyngeus muscle (in neck) - involved in elevating larynx + pharynx, and functions in swallowing
What is the function of CN X?
Both
Sensation to tongue, larynx, respiratory tract, heart, (epiglottis & palate), external ear canal
Motor to muscles of pharynx, larynx, palate, upper 2/3 oesophagus.
P/S to trachea, bronchi, GIT, heart
What is the function of CN XI?
Motor
Motor to sternocleidomastoid and trapezius muscles
What is the function of CN XII?
Motor
Motor to intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the tongue
