Head & Neck Anatomy: Muscles Of Mastication Flashcards
How many muscles of mastication are there
4
What are the 4 muscles of mastication
Masseter, medial pterygoid, temporalis and lateral pterygoid
The 4 muscles of mastication work with the TMJ to accomplish?
Jaw movement
All muscles of mastication are innervated by which cranial nerve?
Fifth (V)
Masseter has 2 heads, deep and superficial. The superficial head is the bigger one.
Origin: zygomaticus arch
Insertion: angle of the mandible
Action is?
Action os masseter is elevation of the mandible
Temporalis is a fan-shaped muscle
Origin: temporal fossa
Insertion: coronoid process of the mandible
Action?
Action of temporalis is elevation and retraction of the mandible with the posterior portion of the muscle
Medial pterygoid has 2 heads, deep and superficial. The deep head is the bigger one
Origin: medial surface of the lateral plate of the pterygoid process (deep head) and the maxillary tuberosity (superficial head)
Insertion: angle of the mandible
Action?
Elevates the mandible
Lateral pterygoid has two heads, upper and lower
Origin: infratemporal crest of the greater wing of the sphenoid bone(upper head), lateral surface of the pterygoid process (lower head)
Action?
Depress the mandible
