a general term to denote a pathologic or traumatic change in the tissue.
Lesion
focal area of color change not elevated or depressed in relation to its surroundings; flat
Macule
solid, raised lesion less than 5mm in diameter
Papule
solid, raised lesion greater than 5mm in diameter
Nodule
red in color
Erythematous
base is the widest part of an elevated lesion
Sessile
base of an elevated lesion is narrower than the widest part
Pedunculated
exhibiting numerous surface projections
Papillary
exhibiting a rough, warty surface
Verrucous
superficial, partial or total loss of surface epithelium; may arise secondarily from
rupture of bulla (blister)
Erosive
loss of surface epithelium down to the connective tissue, often appears depressed
Ulcerated
narrow, slit-like ulceration or groove
Fissure
slightly elevated and generally flat; (homonym of “plaque” which is the soft white deposit that accumulates on teeth)
Plaque
flat, round, pinpoint area(s) of hemorrhage, usually 3mm or less
Petechia(e)
hemorrhage into the skin, larger than petechia, but less than 1cm
Purpura
flat area of hemorrhage larger than 1cm; bruise
Ecchymosis
fluid-filled, elevated, superficial, 5mm or less in diameter
Vesicle
fluid filled, elevated, superficial, greater than 5mm in diameter
Bulla
superficial, circumscribed cavity filled with pus (purulent exudate)
Pustule
hardened
Indurated
wavelike on palpation due to liquid content
Fluctuant
present in large quantity
Copious
lines forming a skin pattern
Dermatoglyphics
scalloped
Crenated
