Head/face exam - Inspection (6)
Inspect: head position
facial features (shape and symmetry)
tics?
change in shape/unusual features (edema, prominent eyes, hirsutism)
skull (shape, size, symmetry)
scalp (part hair from front to occipital - scales, hair loss, lesions…)
Head/face exam - palpation (5)
Palpate:
skull front to back
hair (texture, color, distribution)
temporal arteries
temporomandibular joint (pain, crepitus, locking, popping)
if salivary glands appear asymmetrical palpate
Assessment of salivary glands
if appear asymmetrical or enlarged, palpate to determine the discreteness, mobility, texture and tenderness.
With the patient’s mouth open, press on the gland to try to express material through the salivary duct.
What is associated with facial spasms upon percussion of the masseter muscle?
hypercalcemia
What does a bruit over the eyes and below the occiput indicate?
Vascular anomaly
