● First historically black institution founded in February 1837, in Pennsylvania. ● This university became apart of a 1980 civil rights lawsuit against the state government. ● 19 years later, they were awarded $35 million.
Cheyney University
● This fraternity was the first to be
created at an HBCU. ● It was founded the fraternity on Nov. 17, 1911, at Howard University. ● It is still a major organization today with headquarters in Decatur, Georgia.
Omega Psi Phi
● This HBCU was created as a response to not allowing Black people to enter into the University of Texas. ● The state Legislature took six months to create this university for Blacks as a law school in 1947.
Texas Southern University
● This university is located in New
Orleans. ● In 2000, it individually produced more successful African American medical school applicants than Johns Hopkins, Harvard University and The University of Maryland combined.
Xavier University
These two colleges produce over half of
the nation’s African American women
who go on to earn doctorates in all
science fields.
Spelman & Bennett College
This is a private university in Raleigh, North Carolina that was built after the Civil War as the first initiative to immerse freed slaves into academics. ● Estey Hall, on its campus, was the first hall that was built for African-American women in college in 1873.
Shaw University
This was the first HBCU owned and
operated by African Americans.
● It is located in Ohio and founded in 1856. ● It was named after a white philanthropist who first led efforts to abolish slavery.
Wilberforce University
James Weldon Johnson attended this
university. ○ He was a civil rights activist ○ Leader of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) ○ Writer of the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing”
Clark Atlanta University
The rivalry between these two universities dates back to 1925. ● The battle for state bragging rights elevated when the football teams of both schools joined the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Bethune Cookman & Florida A&M Unviersity
● This college was founded by two teachers in 1881 and started in the basement of Atlanta’s Friendship Baptist Church. ● The college did not get its first black woman president until 1987. Dr. Johnetta B. Cole.
Spelman College
● This college’s Glee Club was
established in 1911 ● Has had only three directors in its 108 year history. ● Martin Luther King, Jr. was a tenor in the club when he was a student.
Morehouse Glee Club
● Robert Charles Bates, who was the first
certified black architect in the United
States is a graduate of this school
● He became an instructor in the 1890’s.
● He taught the first architecture class to
ever be offered at an HBCU and also
designed several of the buildings on this
campus.
Chaflin University
● This school is the first black college to be considered a Registered National Historic Landmark ● The only to be declared a National Historic Site. ● Under the leadership of Booker T. Washington, students helped to

their work-study program.
