Bai Zhi (Rx Angelicae)
1) Expels wind, elimnates dampness, unblocks the nasal passages and alleviates pain- externally contracted wind cold, esp those w/ headache, nasal congestion, tooth ache, eye pain, frontal headache a)nasal congestion and discharge, frontal headache due to wind cold b)vertex headache, chills, body aches, lack of sweating due to wind cold c) nasal discharge, cough, fever, sore throat due to wind heat d)nasal congestion, nasal pain, yellow purulent discharge due to wind heat w/ dampness 2) Reduces swelling, expels pus - early stages of superficial sores and carbuncles a)boils or ulceration that have not formed pus or have not supperated b) breast abcesses 3)Expels dampness and alleviates discharge - for vaginal discharge due to cold - dampness in the lower burner a) excessive clear vaginal discharge due to cold dampness b) vaginal pain, yellow purulent vaginal discharge due to damp heat 4) use w/ Gan Cao for pain associated w/ ulcers
Xi Xin (Hb Asari) - chinese wild ginger
1)Disperses cold and releases the exterior - abjuntive herb for any external cold pattern, esp w/ the addition of dampness or undelying yang def, wind cold but patients weak, wind cold w/ pain, body aches a)chills, fever, body aches, extreme fatigue, somnelence, coldness of the 4 limbs due to wind cold w/ concurrent yang def b)severe temporal headache due to wind cold 2)Dispels wind, disperses cold, alleviates pain -pain to wind and or cold head ache abdominal pain, tooth ache; wind-cold-dampness a)tooth ache due to wind heat b)chest and sternum pain, stiffling sensation in the chest due to cold bi 3)Warms the lungs, transforms mucous - cough and qi surges upward; cough w/ copious watery sputum a)cough, watery thin mucous due to wind cold b) copious white phlegm and mucous due to wind cold w/ excessive dampness 4)unblocking and facilitating the orifices - for nasal congestion, oral pathology (mouth sores, oral abcess), loss of consciousness a)mouth sores due to heat b)severe nasal congestion due to wind cold damp c)unconsciousness, coma due to phlegm obstructing the orrifices
Sheng Jiang (Rz Zingiberis recens)
1)Releases the exterior and disperses cold - for external cold patterns - chills, fever, cough, ST flu, wind cold a)together in a porridge to treat symptoms of wind cold w/nausea and vomiting b)In a porridge to treat wind heat w/nausea and vomiting 2)Warms the middle burner, alleviates nausea and vomiting - for cold damp phlegm in the ST esp when vomiting a)nausea vomiting of white foamy liquid due to damp cold in the middle burner b) nausea and vomiting due to damp heat 3)warms the lung, stops cough - cough due to both wind-cold cough patterns and chronic lung disorders w/ phlegm a)chills, cough, clear phlegm, nausea body due to wind cold b) cough w/yellow copious phlegm due to phlegm heat 4)resolves toxicity - treats overdose of other herbs a)detoxes = Fu Zi, Cao Wu, Wu Tou, Zhi Ban Xia
Cong Bai (Bulbus Allii fistulosi)* green onion
1) Releases the exterior and induces sweating - for externally contracted wind cold esp in the early stages a) chills, fever, no sweating, nasal congestion due to blockage of yang qi by cold a)oppresion and constriction due to cold accumulation in the chest - chest bi symdrome 2)Disperses cold and unblocks the yang - for sores and abscesses, hot toxic sores applied as a poultice a)w/honey made into a paste and applied to hot toxic sores 3) Resovles toxicity and disperses clumps
Xiang Ru (Hb Moslae)
1)Induces sweating and releases the exterior - externally contracted patterns of wind-cold during the summer, esp when acccompanied by dampness - chills fever, headache, abscense of sweating, body aches a) chills, no sweats, slight fever, headache, nasal congestion, heaviness in the head, nausea due to wind cold attack in summer w/ dampness 2)promotes urination alleviates swelling -edema and urinary difficulty a) swelling and edma of limbs due to damp accumulation
Cang Er Zi (Fr Xanthii)
1)disperses wind and dampness and opens the nasal passages - for any nasal/sinus problems w/ a thick, viscous discharge and related, loss of smell a) nasal congestion, profused thick nasal discharge frontal headache due to wind cold w/dampness 2)disperses cold resolves dampness - wind damp painful obstruction or skin disorders w/ itching a) lower back pain or restricted movement due to wind cold damp bi obstruction 3) dispels exterior wind - external disorders w/ spiltting headache that radiates to the back of the neck due to wind cold
Xin Yi Hua (Fl Magnoliae)
1) expels wind cold and unblocks the nasal pasages - nasal obstruction/ congestion, nasal discharge, lack of smell w/ wind cold a) nasal obstruction discharge headache due to wind cold b) nasal obstruction, yellow nasal discharge , headache, fever due to wind heat
Bo He (Hb Menthae)

1) Disperse wind heat and benefits the throat- wind heat w/ sore throat a)fever, no chills, no sweating, sore throat due to wind heat 2) Resolves toxicity and vents rashes - mumps, measels, imcomplete expression of a rash a) incomplete expression of rashes due to wind heat b) abscess and lesions in the throat due to fire toxins 3)moistens the intestines - for exterior contracted toxins w/ symptons a sore throat, erythema, and maculopapular rashes, internal heat causing constipation
