What are the six categories of HAZMAT?

What is incompatible material?
Any HAZMAT that if mixed together, could cause a chemical reaction or hazard
What 3 phases start once a HAZMAT/HAZWASTE spill is discovered?
- Discovery and Notification
- Containment and DC
- Cleanup and Decontamination
What minimum equipment is required by personnel prior to checking out HAZMAT?
- Splash proof gloves
- Chemical resistant gloves
Define HAZMAT
Any material that, because of its quantity, concentration, or physical, chemical, or infectious characteristics, may pose a substantial hazard to human health or the environment when released or spilled into the environment.
Define HAZWASTE
Any discarded material (liquid, solid, gas) that meets the definition of an HM or is designated as HW by the EPA or state or local authority.
Define Oily Waste
Oil mixed with water or other fluids such that the mixture is no longer useful
Define Waste Oil
Oil whose characteristics have changed markedly since being originally refined and has become unsuitable for use, and is not considered economically recyclable.
Describe actions taken for all oil spills WITHIN the U.S. contiguous zone. [4]
- Notify the shore side NOSC/cognizant facility commanding officer by the most expeditious means possible
- Notify the National Response Center (NRC) by telephone at (800) 424-8802
- Take, insofar as practical, immediate actions to mitigate the effects of the spill
- Follow up by submitting a naval message
Describe the actions taken for all oil spills OUTSIDE the U.S. contiguous zone. [3]
- Initiate immediate action to mitigate the effects of the spill
- Notify the predesignated fleet NOSC by naval message
- The fleet NOSC shall implement the applicable fleet NOSC Oil and Hazardous Substance Spill Response Plan
What four categories must trash be separated as?
- Paper (palpable)
- Plastic
- Metal/glass
- Non-processable (clothing, rags)
What is the underway discharge limitation for GARBAGE?
No garbage discharges shall occur within 3nm of any coastline
What is the underway discharge limitation for PLASTIC?
Law prohibits discharge of plastics to the marine environment from Navy surface ships
What does HICS/WIN stand for?
Hazardous Inventory Control System for Windows
Allows HAZMAT personnel to maintain management of the Hazmat Minimization Center
