What are volcanic/toxic gaes?

A

released during some eruptions, can replace oxygen as it is heavier

13
Q

What are hotspots?

A

areas of volcanic activity that are not related to plate boundaries. Hot magma plumes from the mantle rise and burn through weaker points of the crust. The plume stays in place but the plates continue to move

16
Q

How is the magnitude of volcanoes measured?

A

by the VEI (Volcanic Explosivity Index)

17
Q

What does it mean if a volcano is more explosive?

A

more powerful / higher magnitude

18
Q

What does it mean if a volcano is more effusive?

A

less powerful / lower magnitude

19
Q

What is an active volcano?

A

a volcano that had erupted in living memory (150-200yrs)

20
Q

Example of an active volcano?

21
Q

What is a dormant volcano?

A

a volcano that has erupted in historical record (500 yrs)

22
Q

Example of a dormant volcano:

23
Q

What is an extinct volcano?

A

a volcano which will not erupt again (10,000 years)

24
Q

Example of an extinct volcano?

A

Edinburgh Castle

25
What is viscosity?
runniness of the magma
26
What are the 3 factors viscosity depends upon?
- temperature - silica content - volume of dissolved gases
27
What are some PRIMARY social effects of volcanoes?
- deaths - homes destroyed
28
What are some PRIMARY economic effects of volcanoes?
- businesses destroyed - costs of rebuilding - attract tourism e.g. Iceland
29
What are some PRIMARY political effects of volcanoes?
- conflict and unrest - gov may have to invest money into rebuilding, haulting other political plans
30
What are some PRIMARY environmental effects of volcanoes?
- damaged ecosystems - ash/clouds decrease temperatures - acidification of marine and land ecosystems
31
What are some SECONDARY social effects of volcanoes?
- homelessness - trauma - further death risk
32
What are some SECONDARY economic effects of volcanoes?
- jobs lost - profit from tourist industry
33
What are some SECONDARY political effects of volcanoes?
- conflicts and unrest
34
What are some SECONDARY environmental effects of volcanoes?
- volcanic gases contribute to global warming/climate change
35
What are some PREVENTION responses to volcanoes?
- cannot always be prevented - not allow people near the hazard
36
What are some PREPARDENESS responses to volcanoes?
- monitoring increases notice of eruptions, so warnings can be issued out early - education - evacuation processes/procedure plans - training response teams
37
What are some MITIGATION responses to volcanoes?
- direct intervention to the volcano e.g. concrete blocks to steer away the lava - strengthening buildings - emergency aid and rescue (to mitigate effects on health)
38
What are some ADAPTATION responses to volcanoes?
- move away from the area at risk - encourage tourism - change profession to not be effected by the hazard
39
What is lapili?
size of tephra, volcanic rock materials formed when magma is ejected by a volcano
