What was typhoon Haiyan?
A
- A super typhoon
- category 5 storm
- hit the Philippines on 8th November 2013
- originated in north west pacific with excess of 195 miles per hour

Name the primary effects of the typhoon
A
- Roughly 6500 were killed (many people drowned by storm surge)
- 90% of the city of tacloban was destroyed
- over 600,000 people displaced and 40,000 homes wrecked

Name the secondary effects of the typhoon
A
- 14 million people affected
- 6 million people lost their source of income
- flooding caused land slides and roads were blocked (cut of aid to isolated communities)
- looting and violence broke out in tacloban

Name some of the short term responses
A
- US aircraft conducted a search and rescue mission and delivered aid
- 1200 evacuation centres set up for the homeless
- UK government sent shelter kits
- Philippines Red Cross delivered food aid

What were some of the long term responses?
A
- ‘cash for work’ program set up = people paid to clean debris and rebuild Tacloban
- aid agencies, e.g oxfam supported the replacement of fishing boats which were a vital source of income
- thousands of new homes built away from areas at risk of coastal flooding
