Hazards - Textbook Flashcards
Btw I haven’t looked at the whole of Hazards on the textbook
As I switched to online course halfway
What is a hazard
It’s the threat of substantial loss of life, substantial impact upon life or damage to property that can be caused by an event
What is an event
Events can be caused by human actions (eg explosion) or are mainly natural (earthquakes, storms, volcanoes, wildfires )
Natural events can be a consequence of human actions eg wildfires can be ignited by human carelessness
When does a disaster occur
A disaster occurs as a result of a hazard - eg living on a fault line is a hazard where’s as an earthquake on a fault line that has enormous impacts on people/ property is a disaster
What has happened to the amount of deaths from natural disasters over time
Deaths have significantly decreased over time - from around 900k to 100k in 2000 average
Although the amount of people reported affected has hugely risen
What do the impacts of hazards depend on
Location of the hazard relative to areas of population
Magnitude of hazard
Extent of hazard
Each type of hazard has its own determining factors that affect impacts eg availability of vegetation in a wild fire
