What is a hazard

A

It’s the threat of substantial loss of life, substantial impact upon life or damage to property that can be caused by an event

What is an event

A

Events can be caused by human actions (eg explosion) or are mainly natural (earthquakes, storms, volcanoes, wildfires )

Natural events can be a consequence of human actions eg wildfires can be ignited by human carelessness

When does a disaster occur

A

A disaster occurs as a result of a hazard - eg living on a fault line is a hazard where’s as an earthquake on a fault line that has enormous impacts on people/ property is a disaster

What has happened to the amount of deaths from natural disasters over time

A

Deaths have significantly decreased over time - from around 900k to 100k in 2000 average

Although the amount of people reported affected has hugely risen

A

Location of the hazard relative to areas of population

Magnitude of hazard

Extent of hazard

Each type of hazard has its own determining factors that affect impacts eg availability of vegetation in a wild fire
