Storm originated in the NW pacific and became one of the most powerful storms ever seen, with wind speeds in excess of 195 mph

- 6500 people killed
- 90% of the city of tacloban destroyed with over 600,000 people displaced and 40,000 homes wrecked
- crops destroyed

Secondary effects
A
- flooding caused landslides and road blockages, cutting off aid to isolated communities
- 14 million people affected
- shortages of fresh water, food + shelter affected many people causing outbreak of disease

Short term responses
A
- french, Belgian and Israeli government set up field hospitals to help the injured
- 1200 evacuation centres were set up for the homeless
- uk governments sent shelter kits

- ‘cash for work’ programmes set up to clear debris and rebuild tacloban
- cyclone shelters have been built in coastal areas
- rebuilding of roads, bridges, airport facilities, schools and homes
