hazards basics Flashcards
at risk zones ?
dwellings less than 10m above sea level
disaster risk equation ?
capacity to cope
adaptation ?
changing current lifestyle to survive
mitigation ?
working towards reducing the impacts of climate change
disaster hotspot ?
exposure to risk from two or more hazard groups
example of a hazard hotspot ?
Manila- more hazardous on the east and south coasts. West coast fairly unaffected or minor risk
countries at risk from sea level rise ?
Bangladesh
Maldives
Netherlands
Factors that can increase hazard risk ? (7)
- income
- deforestation
- age
- population density
- healthcare
- urbanisation
- national gdp
how do hurricanes develop ?
- over warm, tropical oceans (at least 27•)
- in the trade wind belt between latitudes 5• and 20• either side of the equator
- wind speeds have to be near constant between ground level and 12 km above
Coriolis force ?
- the rotational force exerted on winds by the earths rotation
a feedback mechanism ?
a process whereby the output of a system acts to amplify (positive) or reduce (negative) further output
eg melting of arctic permafrost= release of large quantities of trapped methane—increasing global warming
indirect impact of climate change example ?
- thermal expansion of oceans=rising sea levels
