What is a Natural Hazard?
those caused in nature by elements of weather, tectonic activity and coastal influences
What are manmade hazards?
those caused by human activities which may occur because of negligence or intent of causing harm, E.g., bombs, chemical explosions, pests and diseases, cyber crime
Examples of natural hazards?
drought, floods,
hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, landslides
Examples of manmade hazards?
Social Unrest, Wars, cybercrime, chemical explosions, coups, terrorism and oil spills
What is a hazard?
any event that can cause injury or death, meaning that it has the potential to be dangerous or result in negative consequences
What is a disaster?
a sudden extremely unfortunate event that results in negative consequences
What is mitigation?
any activities which can be completed to reduce or prevent the impact of a hazardous event
What is risk?
the chance or the potential that a hazard will occur and cause harm to someone.
What is disaster preparedness?
activities taken by a population to deal with or cope with a possible disaster
