Hazardous Earth Flashcards
Name the parts of the mantle
Lithosphere
Asthenosphere
Lower mantle
Describe the mantle
2900 km thicc
Liquid like
Made of rock
Describe the outer core
Made of iron and nickel
2200 km thicc
Between 4000 and 6000 degrees Celsius
Describe the inner core
Solid due to pressure
Iron and nickel alloy
Similar temperature to the surface of the sun
Name the types of crust
Continental and oceanic
How is heat created in the earths core
Radioactive decay
From when it was formed
What are the two types of crust
Oceanic and continental
What is it called when boiling magma floats around in a circular motion
Convection currents
Name the plate boundaries and their properties
Divergent-plates move apart, causes shield volcanoes and minor earthquakes
Convergent-one plate moves under the other- causes volcanoes and big earthquakes
Conservative-plates move last each other-no volcanoes but big earthquakes
Collision- plates move towards each other. Large earthquakes, no volcanoes
Name two other pate boundaries and their properties
Conservative-plates move last each other-no volcanoes but big earthquakes
Collision- plates move towards each other. Large earthquakes, no volcanoes
Where can volcanoes be formed other than on plate boundaries?
On hotspots, soft spots in the crust where hot magma protrudes and causes volcanoes to form
What are the two types of volcanoes and their properties
Composite- large explosion with ash and soot shot up into the air. Thick lava. Steep and cone shaped
Shield- no explosion, runny lava. Shallow gradient
What is the jet stream?
An ocean current that runs all the way from the African equator up to England and Greenland. Causes high up places like England to be warmer than they should be
What are the properties of high pressure
Few clouds, clear skies
What are the properties of low pressure
Clouds and rain, low temperature
