Hazardous Earth Flashcards
1
Q
Name the Layers of the Earth
A
Inner Core, Outer Core, Lower Mantle, Upper Mantle, Asthenosphere, Lithosphere and Crust.
2
Q
Continental Crust
A
Forms the Land, 30-50km Deep (thick), Made of Granite and Low Density.
3
Q
Oceanic Crust
A
Under the Oceans, 6-8km deep (thin), Made of Basalt and High Density
4
Q
Convection Currents and Continental Drift
A
- Convection currents rise from being heated by the mantle.
- As the currents get further away it cools down.
- It starts to fall back down and pulls the plates in the direction they go
- The plates will either crash together or move apart
- This process repeats
5
Q
Hotspot Volcanoes
A
- The mantle plume makes it’s way through the Crust
- The mantle plume goes through the Crust, erupting and cooling into rock
- The process repeats and the volcano breaks to the surface
- As the tectonic plates move, so does the hot spot
- The process keeps repeating and a chain of volcanoes forms
