Hazardous Earth Flashcards
revision for test
What are the four major layers of the Earth’s structure?
Crust, Mantle, Inner Core, Outer Core
Which layer is the thickest?
Mantle
Which two layers are entirely solid?
Crust, Inner Core
What are the two different types of crust?
Oceanic, Continental
Which type of crust is more dense? Why is this important?
The oceanic crust is more dense, this is significant because when it meets with a continental crust, at a collision plate boundary, the density of the oceanic crust means it goes underneath the continental crust.
What is the name of the process that causes the Earth’s tectonic plates to move?
Convection Currents
How many different types of plate boundary are there?
4- Convergent, Collision, Divergent, Conservative
What direction do the plates move in at a convergent plate boundary?
Towards each other
True or False? Volcanoes occur at conservative plate boundaries.
True
Explain two characteristics of a shield volcano.
Low, gently sloping domes
Explain two characteristics of a composite volcano.
Tall, steep-sided cones, several thousand metres high, narrow base
What is a hot spot?
Fixed plume of magma in the middle of a tectonic plate.
Complete these sentences:
In an earthquake, the point of rupture - where the earthquake happens underground - is called the f____. Shock waves radiate out from this point. The e________ is the point directly above this on the Earth’s surface (where the earthquake is felt the most)
1.focus
2.epicentre
What does magnitude mean?
Magnitude means how strong the earthquake is- the higher the magnitude, the stronger and more intense the earthquake is
What is the name of the scale that earthquakes are measured on?
The Richter Scale
