Hazardous Chemicals and Safety Flashcards
What are the 5 physical hazards?
- Exploding bomb
- Flame
- Flame over circle
- Gas cylinder
- Corrosive to metals
What are the 4 health hazards?
- Skull and crossbones
- Corrosive to skin
- Health hazard
- Exclamation mark
What harm could a Biohazardous Infectious Material cause?
Risk to the health of humans, animals, or the environment.
How is the environmental hazard dangerous?
Hazardous to aquatic environment and/or ozone layer.
What does the hexagon mean?
Danger
What does the diamond/square mean?
Warning
What does the triangle mean
Caution
What are the 3 levels of warning?
Danger, warning, caution
What does HHPS stand for?
Hazardous Household Product Symbols
What are the HHP symbols?
- Poison (skull and crossbones)
- Explosive (explosion)
- Flammable (fire)
- Corrosive (hand in box)
Exploding bomb meaning and classification
Classification: Physical hazard
Meaning: Explosive, self-reactive
Gas cylinder meaning and class
Class: Physical hazard
Meaning: Substance or container with GASES UNDER PRESSURE
Health hazard meaning and class
Class: Health hazard
Meaning: May cause serious health effects
Flame meaning and class
Class: Physical hazard
Meaning: fire hazard
Corrosive to skin and metals meaning and class
Class: Physical and health
Meaning: corrosive to skin, metals, irritation, damage
Exclamation mark meaning and class
Class: Health hazard
Meaning: acute toxicity, may cause serious side effects to someone’s health
Flame over circle class and meaning
Class: physical hazard
Meaning: (the chemical is) Something that is flammable when exposed to a certain amount of oxygen
Skull and cross bones class and meaning
Class: physical hazard
Meaning: Acute toxicity, may cause death.
Environmental hazard class and meaning
Class: environment hazard
Meaning: hazardous to aquatic environment and ozone layer
Biohazardous infectious material class and meaning
Class: Health and environmental hazard
Meaning: Hazardous to the health of people, animals, and the environment
What are the two main types of safety?
WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System)
and
HHPS (Hazardous Household Product Symbols)
What are physical and chemical characteristics
Odour, colour, etc.
What is the reactivity data of a chemical referring to?
If it will react with other chemicals
What is “toxicological health hazard data”?
How the chemical can get into your body and how it will affect your health
What are “safe-handling procedures”?
The correct way to use and dispose of the chemical
What are “control measures”?
How we can protect ourselves against the hazardous material
How many different sections are on the SDS paper?
16
What does SDS stand for?
Safety Data Sheet
How must chemicals be stored?
Must be stored in approved containers, and as stated on their labels. Flammables should be stored in cool, dry places, away from heat.
What does it mean when something is “oxidizing”?
An oxidizing substance is a substance that combines with oxygen and loses hydrogen to form another substance
How do you get the chemical off your skin
Wash your skin with water
What would an adult do if a chemical spilled?
Sweep up chemicals and use them as fertilizer if not contaminated.
What should you do if a chemical gets in your eye?
Wash your eyes with water while lifting your upper and lower eyelids. Do this for 15 minutes.
What should you do if you inhale the chemical?
Get fresh air (outside) and seek medical attention.
Why is WHMiS important?
- to identify hazards
- provides health and safety information
- explains how to protect ourselves from exposure
- explains what we should do in the case of an emergency
What is the difference between WHMIS and HHPS?
WHMIS products are for the workplace or used in a lab, where HHPS is a household place, where products are used for household.
When you see a WHMIS Label, THINK:
STOP! Think
Do I know the
hazard?
Do I need more
information?
Label must include
A product identifier (name)
Hazard symbol(s)
Signal word
Hazard Statements
Precautionary statements
Supplier identifier
