HATE/BIAS MOTIVATED CRIME
The following is the definition for a hate/bias motivated criminal occurrence:
A criminal occurrence committed against a __________ or ___________ which is motivated by hate/bias or prejudice based on race, national or ethnic origin, language, color, religion, sex, age, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation, or any other similar factor.
Here are some of what every police services procedures should provide:
- Officers are to respond to all criminal occurrences that are suspected to be hate/bias motivated and they are to be investigated.
- All the evidence from the scene is to be protected.
- Any hate/bias occurrences should forwarded to the intelligence unit or to your dedicated hates/bias crime unit.
- If you suspect is charged with a hate/bias crime The officer should check if the suspect owns or possess any firearms, and if so considerate of the powers available in the criminal code to search and seize those firearms.
- That the chief or designate is to be notified of any hate/bias motivated crimes.
- Meet with the victim or a group affected to answer questions and inform them of the services activities to Investigate the crime.
- Offices are to indicate on the report that the occurrence is a suspected hate/bias motivated crime.
