Harmony Flashcards
What chord is constructed on the raised subdominant scale degree and is used in first inversion with doubled fifth? How is it analyzed?
Italian sixth
6/ IV 3 3
What chord is constructed on the supertonic scale degree and is used in second inversion? How is it analyzed and figured?
French sixth
6/ II 4 3
What are the two forms of the German sixth as described in chapter 16 of the harmony book? How are they analyzed and figured?
First is constructed on the raised subdominant scale degree in first inversion. /6 IV b5 3 Second is constructed on the raised supertonic scale degree in second inversion. Progresses to I-6/4 followed by V. /6 II /4 3
What is a cadential six-four chord?
It is only ever a tonic six-four that moves to a dominant.
What is a passing six-four?
A six-four chord that is in between two inversions of the same chord. Ex. One (root position) Five (64) One (6).
What is an auxiliary six-four?
A six-four chord which appears between two root positions of the same chord. Ex. One (root position) Four (64) One (root position)
What is an arpeggiated six-four?
A second inversion chord is immediately preceded or followed by the same chord in root position or first inversion. Ex. One (6) One (64) or Four (root position) Four (64)
What is a non-harmonic tone a step above two chord tones of the same pitch and appears in a weak rhythmic position?
Upper Auxiliary
What is a non-harmonic tone a step below two chords of the same pitch and occurs in weak rhythmic position? Maybe chromatically altered.
Lower Auxiliary
Two non-harmonic tones approaching a chord tone; one above and one below. First must occur in a weak rhythmic position. Second may be weak or strong rhythmic position.
Changing Tones
Changing tones that are one note above and below a chord tone but start from a third removed from chord tone.
Nota Cambiata
What are non-harmonic tones approached by disjunct motion in one direction and resolved by conjunct motion in the opposite direction. An upward resolution may be chromatic. Jump up - step down or jump down - step up.
Cambiata
What are non-harmonic tones approached by conjunct motion resolved by disjunct motion in the opposite direction? Occurs in weak rhythmic position. Step down - jump up OR step up - jump down.
Échappée
What is a non-harmonic tone occurring when a note’s natural melodic progression is delayed? Requires two different chords.
Suspension
Three parts of a suspension?
Preparation, suspension, and resolutions.
