Hardy-Weinburg principle Flashcards
What is the correct term for BB?
Homozygous dominant
What is the correct term for bb?
Homozygous recessive
What is the correct term for Bb?
Heterozygous
What is a gene pool?
The total number of alleles of the breeding individuals in a population at one time
What factors allow the Hardy-Weinburg principle to be applied?
- Population is large
- No immigration or emigration
- No variation/mutations
- Mating is random
When can these factors be met?
In the real world it is extremely unlikely to find a population which fulfils all of these criteria. They can only be met when population is under control in a lab.
What letter does the dominant allele (B) get?
p
What letter does the recessive allele (b) get?
q
What letter does the homozygous dominant allele (BB) get?
p²
What letter does the homozygous recessive allele (bb) get?
q²
What letter does the heterozygous allele (Bb) get?
2pq
What is the first equation of the H-W principle?
p + q = 100% or 1.0
What is the main equation of the H-W principle?
p² + 2pq + q² = 100% or 1.0
What questions do you have to ask to answer H-W questions?
- Which allele are we concerned with?
- Which part of the HW equation do we already know?
- What part do we actually need to answer the question?
