Hardy - Weinberg Principle Flashcards
1
Q
What is the Hardy - Weinberg principle?
A
A mathematical equation that can be used to calculate the frequencies of alleles of a particular gene in a population
2
Q
What are the assumptions?
A
They assume that the proportion of dominant and recessive alleles remains constant from each generation.
This is the case if:
- No mutations arise
- The population is isolated and no flow of alleles out of the population
- No selection
- Very large
- Random mating
3
Q
What is the equation for genotype frequency?
A
p + q = 1
4
Q
What is the equation for allele frequency?
A
p2 + 2PQ + q2 = 1
