Hardy was an architect therefore worked with men like the man in the poem. Father and Grandfather all stonemason also, meaning he grew up with this kind of man also, perhaps observing them work

Lived in a thatched cottage and grew up in rural area. This means he was able to observe the thatcher probably more than once

- Both dramatised encounters: Hardy=Meeting street, dialogue
Heaney=Child’s memory 3rd person - Tone of admiration and respect in each case

- Hardy allows workman to express pride in his creation and how it’ll last
- Heaney focuses more on process of Thatching, from beginning to completion
