What makes up the mainboard (motherboard)?
CPU, Chipset, RAM, ROM, BIOS, Buses, and CMOS battery
What is the Central Processing Unit (CPU)?
the brain of the computer, performs calculations
What is a chipset?
controls communication between CPU and other components
What is Random-Acess Memory (RAM)?
temporarily stores files currently being worked on
What is Read-Only Memory (ROM)?
permanently stores instructions for computer (stores the BIOS)
What is the Basic Input Output System (BIOS)?
program a computer software used to turn on the system (includes both boot firmware and power management firmware)
What are Buses?
connect CPU to various internal components and expand cards for graphics/sounds
SSD
stores data on flash memory
Fixed media
hard disks, SSDs
Removable media
USB, optical disk
What are input devices?
user enters information into the system/controls operation (ex. mouse, keyboard, touchpad, webcam, microphone, etc)
What are output devices?
display information in readable form (ex. printers, speakers, monitors, etc.)
What is System software?
designed to operate/control hardware and provide platform for application software
