Coil
A
Wire wrapped around a core. It could be flat or a helix. Can be used as an inductor or to create a magnetic field.

A
A coil which travels in the z direction giving a 3D shape to a wire.

Solenoid
A
A piece of wire usually wrapped around a piece of metal. Can be used to generate a magnetic field or actuate linear motion when electricity is passed through it.

A
Device that converts energy into mechanical, acoustic, electromagnetic, or thermal energy.

Magnetic Field from a Solenoid Magnet
A
For an ideal, infinite solenoid magnet, field lines inside the coil all point in the same direction traveling straight through the coil. An electron traveling through this field would travel in a helical path making revolutions about the central axis.
