Hard questions part 2 Flashcards
1
Q
Oestrogen is lipid soluble. Which molecule does oestrogen interact with when it changes cell activity
A
DNA
2
Q
How can something lead to excessive production of a hormone
A
- Cells produce more hormone than normal
- Due to up regulation of genes
- Synthesising more hormone/proteins
- Other tissues could be stimulated to produce more hormone than normal
3
Q
Suggest three improvements to this method that would increase the validity of the slides produced
- Select a blade
- Cut Heliamphora tissue
- Select best pieces
- Place on slide
- Add cover slip
A
- sharp blade (should be selected) so slide is thin enough that individual cells are visible / resolution is high
- Use a microtome for slicing pieces of tissue (thinly) so slide is thin enough , individual cells are visible /resolution is high
- Select thin(nest) slides to ensure maximum light can penetrate sample
- Wet mount- prevents dehydration / distortion of tissue
- Squash slide- easier to see individual cells / allows light to penetrate tissue more easily
