Hard Engineering Flashcards
1
Q
What are hard engineering defences used for?
A
- put in place from Selsey Bill to Brighton to disrupt the sediment cell that would naturally erode the beaches of Brighton
- Selsey Bill is made up of loosely consolidated sands + rocks = little resistance to erosion by the high energy destructive waves concentrated on the headland
- the shape of the coastline also prevents the accumulate of shingle = cliff even less protected
- this means there is a lot of sediment being transported from Selsey bill, with additional sediment being sourced from the river = groynes are designed to stop
2
Q
Groynes
A
- implemented along Brighton under the shoreline management plan (due to high social + economic value)
- the groynes cause sediment sourced from river + Selsey bill to be stopped from being transferred along the coast by LSD (Swash picks up sediment + carries it to the beach, + then backwash takes sediment back under gravity in continuous cycle)
- instead sediment builds up the beaches + protects the sea front

Q
Sea wall
A
- in Brighton
- initially cost £100,000 with high maintenance costs
