A

What is the Tabula Rasa? [3]

The Tabula Rasa is the theory by Locke, that states the mind is a blank slate at birth, therefore has no ideas on it. Locke argues that we gain ideas through impressions which we gain by experience. We make faint copies of impressions (both of sensation and reflection) to gain our ideas. (Hume’s Copy Principle)

Q

What are simple and complex concepts? [3]

A

A simple idea is an idea which we receive, which cannot be broken down into constituent parts, they are the most fundamental idea we can receive, e.g. coldness. Complex ideas are made of various simple concepts put together. E.g. a snowball is composed of the simple ideas of coldness and roundness.

Q

What is Hume’s Copy Principle? [3]

A

Hume argues that we receive impressions, either impressions of sensations (from sense experience) or impressions of reflection (from our introspection). From these we make faint copies in our memories - these are our ideas.
