Q

what is the via negativa (apophatic way)?

A

roots from neo-platonism of the second century, arguing we should say nothing positive of God, because we cannot begin to comprehend him. all we can say is what he is not, preserving his dignity

Q

what does Gregory of Nyssa say?

A

describes spiritual life as a ‘mysticism of darkness’, there comes a point at which a believer enters into an ‘outer darkness and enter into the apophatic way of Gods ineffable transcendent reality’. at this point, there are no words to describe god, it is completely beyond words and images

Q

what did moses maimondes say?

A

a medieval jewish theologian; ‘god cannot be the object of human comprehension, that none but himself comprehends who he is, and that our knowledge consists in knowing that we are unable truly to comprehend him. all we understand is the fact he exists, that he is a being to whom none of his creatures is similar’. uses the example of describing a ship by saying what its not

Q

How does B davies criticise moses maimondes?

A

argues you could just as easily end up with a wardrobe by describing what something is not- the via negativa leaves us with limited understanding of god

13
Q

why do religious believers see weaknesses in the apophatic way?

A

most believers describe the love of god, and speak of him in a positive way rather than a negative way. it is an unnatural way to talk of god

14
Q

another weakness of the apophatic way?

A

to say what god is not in a way implies the positive. to say god is not limited by time tells us something about god still

16
Q

What is the analogy of attribution?

A

We attribute a characterisitc that we can experience, to reflect something that is beyond experience. For example, healthy urine reflects a healthy bull; good bread is attributed to a good baker. Not using “good” in the same way.

17
Q

what is the analogy of proportion?

A

God, as the sum of all perfections is proportionally much greater than humans. Therefore God’s goodness is proportionately much greater than our goodness.

18
Q

how does hick support analogy?

A

hick supports analogy by since it enable us to speak of god whilst remaining mysterious. he offers the incarnation as a way to show gods attitudes and character are shown through the stories of jesus. therefore, allowing us to make statements of god

19
Q

what does don scotus say of analogy?

A

its too vague and leaves us unable to understand god or his actions

20
Q

a major problem of analogy…

A

is that it assumes a similarity between god and humans, which becomes difficult if there are proportional differences and god is completely different to humans. there is no point of reference to judge the appropriateness of the analogy

21
Q

What is a symbol?

A

participates in to which it points. a flag is a symbol of a nation, also participating in the power and dignity of a nation

22
Q

How is a sign different to a symbol? (according to tillich)

A

a sign simply points to something outside itself

23
Q

how does Tillich see symbols?

A

symbols ‘work on a deep and powerful level a symbol unlocks something within our soul and expresses something about the ultimate’.
