Hannah Geog Flashcards
What is climate
Climate is a large national scale or a long time scale of a year decade or monthly. It is usually based on an average of thirty years
What is weather
Weather is a small scale of the heat outside. The small scale on our local or near town. It is usually shown as the present temperature and then an approximate of what the future weather is going to be
What is the difference between weather and climate
Weather is the day to day changes in the atmosphere whilst a climate is a overall pattern of weather
What is precipitation
Precipitation is anything that falls from the sky technically
What is cloud cover
Cloud cover is a small scale of how many clouds you could see
What is humidity
Humidity is how much moisture there is in the air
What is sunshine
Sunshine is how high the sun is and what the intensity is
What is air pressure
Air pressure is caused by the air on the surface of land and heat. Although we can’t feel it the air above us is pressing down on us, giving air pressure. If air pressure is low it means it is rising if air pressure is high it means air is sinking.
What is wind direction
The wind direction is the direction in which the wind is blowing for example south or north
What is wind speed
The speed in which the wind is blowing
What is temperature
The temperature is the warmth of the air particles and the atmosphere
What is an air mass
An air mass is a large pocket of air that has uniform characteristics
Which part of the British isles have the highest rainfall
In the British isles the highest rainfall occurs in the west of the British isles whereas if you live in the east you will get less rainfal
What is relief rainfall
Relief rainfall is precipitation that occurs due to high ground sometimes known as orographic rainfall.
Where is the highest temperatures in January
In the west and southwest
What is an upland area with a temperature less than -1 Clecius
The Grampian mountains
Stuff about latitude
As latitude increases temperature decreases due to less heating from the sun
Stuff about distance from The coast
The sea takes a long time to heat up and cool down. in winter it stays relatively warmer than land in winter the sea has a warming affect on land. In summer the sea takes a long time to warm up Qin summer the sea has a cooling effect on land. Places closer to the coast have a moderate temperature. They may also feel wetter depending on the wind direction
What is prevailing wind direction
Prevailing wind direction is wind from the south bringing warm temperatures. Wind from the north brings cool temperatures. Wind from the sees bring wet conditions. Wind from land areas bring dry conditions
What are ocean currents
Ocean currents from the equator can carry warm water across the sea. This warm water warms the air above it and the land it reaches
What is the height above sea level
As altitude increases temperature decreases. This means that the upland areas have lower temperatures
What is shelter
Areas exposed to strong wins may be cooler other places may be sheltered and have slightly higher temperatures. Areas on exposed mountain peaks may have more rainfall but areas in the rain shadow are drier
How built up is a place
Built up areas produce and trap energy. They are warmer than rural areas
What are isobars
Isobars are lines that join places at the same air pressure
What is low pressure systems
When air rises it creates low pressure system. Air rising means clouds form and there is a possibility of rain
What is high pressure systems
When air sinks and warms this causes a high pressure system. There are clear skies and no rain.
