Hangar Familiarization Flashcards
What are hangars
A environmentally protected area to perform maintenance on aircraft or to store them away from the elements
What is a type one hangar?
Type one maintenance hangar is primarily designed for carrier aircraft but is adaptable to meet requirements for rotary wing and various types of smaller aircraft. The type 1 hangar bay module is 235 ft wide by 85ft deep.
What is a type two hangar bay?
Type 2 hangar bays are primarily provided for US Marine Corps aviation designed to accommodate CH-53 helicopters,V-22 Ospreys and C-130 Hercules aircrafts. The type to hangar bay module is 119 feet deep by 325 feet wide
What is a type III hangar bay
Type three maintenance hangar is primarily designed for land based patrol and large transport aircraft. The type three hangar module is 165 feet deep by 165 feet wide.
What are some peculiar items to the shore based hangars that you need to be aware of?
A painted red fire lane adjacent to the bulkhead
Portable C02 fire extinguishers mounted to the bulkhead
Aircraft electrical system with cords for applying external electrical power
Manually or automatically operated hangar door for securing access
Aircraft grounds or areas that provide a 10 0HM or less Access point to ground and discharge stray voltage
Hangar protection requirements for the protection of high-value aircraft are?
A low level AFFF System with low profile
An overhead sprinkler
Optical detection system to activate AFFF system
Appropriate drainage systems
draft curtains
The estimated cost for a false activation would be in excess of $80,000 due to the following conditions
Damage to aircraft
cost to recharge the system
cost of runoff retention
cost of AFFF removal
associated manpower expenses
What are the dimensions of the hanger bays on a CVN aircraft carrier?
110 feet wide by 685 feet long with 25 feet of overhead clearance.
The hangar bays can be used to hold what?
More than 60 aircraft as well as spare jet engines, fuel tanks, and other heavy equipment.
What is the construction and purpose of hangar bay doors?
The hangar bay doors have divisional doors and are constructed to be closed in approximately 18 seconds to separate hangar bays into three separate sections to prevent spread of fire.
What does the shore hanger base and the hanger bays on a ship have in common?
They both have AFFF Fire protection installed in the overhead.
