How to perform holding?
- Done with a full, open, relaxed hand
- Used to introduce to touch
- Allows the client to become accustomed to your touch
- Creates stillness
What are the indications & contraindications for holding?
I :
- Introduce to touch prior to undraping
- Bring attention to an area
- Calm a muscle spasm
CI :
- Over areas of open wound
What are the effects of holding?
- Brings heat to an area
- Calms the sympathetic firing
- Bring proprioceptive awareness to an area
- Allows client to establish time to evaluate presence of touchW
How to perform rocking?
- Using full firm hand, starting with the legs, begin to rock the client back and forth
- Work your way up to the back
What are the indications and contraindications of rocking?
I :
- Introduce touch
- Finish and to gently wake client
CI :
- Client resistance
How to perform stroking?
- Use fingertips, lightly, but make contact
- Steady, light, movement
What are the indications and contraindications for stroking?
I :
- At the start or finish of the massage
CI :
- Client preference
What are the indications and contraindications of effleurage?
I :
- Part of the regular massage protocol
CI :
- Tortuous varicose veins
- Thrombus
- Certain heart conditions
What are the effects of effleurage?
- Fast superficial strokes are stimulation
- Slow superficial strokes are soothing
- Slow deep application stimulates parasympathetic firing
- Increase venous return, drainage
What are the indications and contraindications of petrissage?
I :
- Separate tissues
- Reduce fibrosing and adhesions
- Release hypertonic muscles
CI :
- Flaccid tissue / atrophied muscle
- Technique and depth dependent
- Acute inflammation
What are the effects of petrissage?
- Reduce hypertonicity
- Loosen muscles, connective tissue, adhesions
- Increases circulation therefore increasing nutrient / waste exchange
What are the indications & contraindications of compression?
I :
- Used when gliding techniques should not or can not be done
- May be used over clothes or when lubricant cannot be used
- In areas of excessive body hair or ticklish areas
CI :
- Underlying injury
- Client’s comfort
- Local circulatory issues, such as DVT
What are effects of compressions?
- Enhances circulation
- Causes muscle spindles to fire by the creation of a load tension in the muscles
What are the indications and contraindications of stripping?
I :
- Muscle adhesions
- Specific muscle hypertonicity within the belly
CI :
- Flaccid muscle
- Acute inflammation
- Thrombus
- Bruising
- Cyst
- Numbness
What are the effects of stripping?
- Separate muscle fibers
- Breaks down adhesions
What are the indications & contraindications of shaking?
I :
- Hypertonic muscle
- Client having trouble relaxing
CI :
- Client comfort
What are the effects of shaking?
- Increases circulation
- Decreases muscle hypertonicity
What are the indications & contraindications of vibrations?
I :
- Muscle hypertonicity
- Congested sinuses
CI :
- Client comfort
What are the effects of vibration?
- Less than 30 seconds may stimulate the muscle
- More than 30 seconds may relax the muscle
What are the indications & contraindications of tapotement?
I :
- Stimulate the area, use a fast pace
- Relax the area, use a slow pace
CI :
- Client comfort
- Osteoporosis
What are the effects of tapotement?
- Stimulates the nervous system, specifically proprioceptors
- Increase circulation
- Decreases hypertonicity
- Cupping on thorax may loosen mucus of conditions like chronic bronchitic or cystic fibrosis
