handpiece safety Flashcards
what is the safety protocol before use?
check the device’s integrity & performance
what is the safety protocol during use?
recognise changes in device behaviour
-noise changes, vibrations, heating, intermittent performance
take appropriate remedial action if required
-report faults, change device
what is included in a visual inspection?
expiry date on sterilisation pouch
obvious faults
-dents in device head
-damaged surface of optical rod
what are the 6 safety checks?
- check backcap secure
- check bur secure
- check device fits securely to coupling
- check bur spins freely
- check bur’s lateral movement
- check sound produced in consistent
how is the backcap checked? (1)
ensure the backcap cannot rotate
pinch outer rim of device head and apply rotational force
if can be rotated send for repair
how is the bur checked? (2)
pull to ensure fully engaged
apply significant tension
how to check coupling? (3)
fit handpiece to coupling
apply tension to ensure device secured
why do you need to check bur spins freely? (4)
frictional resistance between components may cause overheating during use
why do you need to check lateral movement? (5)
too much deflection will cause bur to wobble when activated, compromising control and cutting performance
how do you check handpiece performance? (6)
run device for 5 sec
ensure it sounds right and bur doesn’t wobble
when should handpiece safety protocol be done?
for each device used
in instinctive, seamless, repeatable way
what should you do if you suspect a fault?
inform a dental nurse who will complete a dental handpiece fault report
