Handout 1.3 Flashcards
How can we find the position where the image of an object forms behind the mirror?
When we view an object through a plane mirror, the light rays from the object are reflected by the plane mirror and enter our eyes. If we extend the reflected rays virtually back behind the mirror, the lines meet at a point.
The image of an object that is formed by a mirror is formed ___________________________ and called a __________________________. Why?
behind the mirror; virtual image.
This is because the reflected rays do not actually come from the image behind the mirror. Moreover, this is because a virtual image cannot be projected on a screen.
-
The object distance and the image distance are equal.
The straight line joining the object and the image is perpendicular to the plane mirror.
Name four properties of images formed by a plane mirror.
The image distance is equal to the object distance.
The image and the object are of the same size.
The image is erect and laterally inverted.
The image is virtual.
We can use a method called ___________________ to show how we see mirror images. ___________________ with ________________ are used for real rays in front of the mirror, and ___________________ are used for extended rays behind the mirror.
ray-tracing, solid lines, arrows, dotted lines
A simple periscope consists of ________________________________________. When we view objects through a periscope, the light rays from the objects ______________________________________________. Describe the image observed.
two parallel plane mirrors facing each other, are reflected twice and then enter our eyes; it is erect and not laterally inverted.
What is the function of periscopes? Name two applications of periscopes in our daily life.
It can be used to see over obstacles and extend our field of view.
The periscope in an old double-decker allows the bus driver to monitor the situation of the upper deck of the bus from the driver seat on the lower deck.
Periscopes are installed in submarines to allow the sailors inside to get a view of the sea surface.
Name three applications of the reflection of light.
Plane mirrors, periscopes and daylighting.
Name the three main applications of plane mirrors and give examples.
Plane mirrors can be used as bathroom mirrors.
They an also be used as rear-view mirrors and dental mirrors to extend the field of view.
A rear-view mirror allows a driver to see the traffic conditions behind the car while still looking to the front.
A dental mirror is an essential tool for dentists to examine the back sides of a patient’s teeth
Plane mirrors can also be used in shops, restaurants, etc to make rooms appear more spacious.
What is daylighting? Give two examples.
In some buildings, sunlight is collected and used for daylighting.
For example, large mirrors are used to reflect sunlight into the buildings.
Sun pipes can also be used. The sunlight is first collected on the root of the building, it is then reflected inside the sun pipes and transmitted into the building.
