Offred makes her way through the house to pick up tokens and go shopping with Offglen. On the way back they stop at the Wall.

She remembers Moira while she was trying to write a paper and her mother taking her to the park to burn pornography. She contemplates who the “you” in this story is.

Eroticism of boredom, memory of Moira arriving at the red centre, period moon, Offred when she tried to run with her child but was caught

Chapter 14 to 17
Household gathers in the living room to begin the ceremony. They complete the ceremony. Later on Offred gets the urge to steal something. She bumps into Nick - they kiss - he tells her the Commander wants to see her privately.

Memory of Luke and the possibilities of his fate.
VIII. Birth Day
Chapter 19 to 23
Offred is picked up by the birth mobile. Wives and Handmaids alike take part in the birthing ceremony. Memories of Janine at the centre after the birth. Meeting with Commander: they play scrabble.
IX. Night
Chapter 24
Offred takes stock of herself. Nazi documentary. Offred has a laughing fit.
X. Soul Scrolls
Chapter 25 to 29
Commander’s arrangement. New awkwardness of ceremony. Soul scrolls and Offred and Offglen’s sudden connection. How Gilead happened. Offred finds out about the “nolite” and what happened to the previous handmaid.
XI. Night
Chapter 30
Memory of killing the cat. Offred’s prayer.
XII. Jezebel’s
Chapter 31 to 39
Deal with Serena to try with Nick. Prayvaganza. Memory of Janine losing it at the centre. Rest of the story of how Offglen tried to escape Gilead and failed. Commander takes her to Jezebel’s. She meets Moira, tells her escape story.
XII. Night
Chapter 40
Serena sneaks Offred out to Nick. They have sex.
XIV. Salvaging
Chapter 41 to 45
Nick and Offred’s connection. Salvaging: women are hanged. The Handmaids form a circle, ready to rip apart a man convicted of rape. Offglen kicks him in the head to knock him out, putting him out of his misery. He was political. Offglen disappears. Offred feels guilty.
XV. Night
Chapter 46
Offred is arrested, but it turns out this is her rescue mission, organised by Nick.
