Handcuffs Flashcards

Q
Handcuff Justification
A
The decision to handcuff rests with you. Officer safety is paramount. Generally, you are justified in handcuffing prisoners only when they have tried to escape, or to prevent escape or injury to themselves or others.

Safeguards
A
- Approach the prisoner from the safest angle using the bladed body positions
- Remain alert and prepared for sudden resistance
- Adopt a good tactical position and maintain control by keeping the prisoner off balance (turn around, legs together, turn your feet out and lean forward at the hips, one arm out and palm towards me, other hand on head, look away from me)
- Ensure the handcuffs are double locked to prevent shimmying, and then check by pulling and pushing on the swinging arm
