Handbuilding Flashcards
What are the 3 techniques of wedging?
- Kneading
- Slamming
- Spiral
Explain 2 reasons we wedge our clay before we use it
- mix clay to an even consistency
2. removes air bubbles
Name 5 methods of hand building
Pinch,Coil, Slab, Molding and Sculpture
Describe Pinch
This method is believed to be the first method of construction ever used
Describe Coil
They should be stacked like tires and not like a hose or snake
Describe Slab
It has 3 kinds of joins, Butt, Miter, and Lap
Describe Molding
Types of molds: Slip casting, press, hump, slump
Describe Sculpture
Purpose may be representation or non-representational
Draw and identify 3 kinds of slab joints
Butt, Miter, Lap
Which two slab joints need reinforcement?
Butt and Miter both need coil reinforcement
Name 5 ways of decorating the form
Applique, Impressing, Incising, Slipping, Burnishing
Describe Applique (adding)
Plastic to plastic requires pressing hard, leather hard requires scoring and slurry
Describe Impressing (stamping)
Stamps must be made of porous material, non- porous will stick to the clay
Describe Incising (carving)
Creates a low relief type of decoration, this is a subtractive method where you are piercing the clay
Describe Slipping (color)
Adding colored slip to leather-hard ware, sgraffito is scratching designs in a colored slip to reveal color, inlay is application of slip inside carved area (opposite of sgraffito)
