Hand Bones Flashcards
Digits mean?
Fingers and toes.
Recall that if naming the hand bones, proximal and distal in relation to the core are defined as?
Proximal: close to the core.
Distal: away from the core.
Remember: always in anatomical position (thumbs up and away from the body midline).
Phalanges are?
Finger bones.
Metacarpals are?
Palm bones.
Carpals (“chiclets”) are?
Wrist bones.
Count to five on the fingers. Which finger is 1 and which finger is 5? Describe where to start and end in Western Anatomy counting!
Thumb = 1.
Pinky = 5.
True or false? The pisiform bone cannot be looked at from the dorsal view? Explain why or why not.
True.
The pisiform bone sits on another bone (looked at from the anterior).
There are two hand bone pictures. Picture 1 has 7 carpal bones and picture 2 has 8 carpal bones. It’s the same hand. Explain why. What is going on?
7 carpal bones is the dorsal (back/upper) or posterior view in anatomical position, and 8 carpal bones is the anterior view (hand facing front in anatomical position) because the pisiform “pea” bone sits on another bone.
*Tell the acronym to remember the orientation and number of the 8 carpal (wrist) bones of the hand. Can you name them all? Remember, clockwise and anterior view…
HCTTSLTP.
How Came The Thumb Seems Like The Pinky?

Trapezium
Scaphoid
Lunate

Pisiform
Which carpal bone “chiclet” is right in line with the radial styloid process (at the wrist).
*Anatomy term: process means projection of tissue (an outgrowth). Bone process is typically a muscle attachment site.
The scaphoid bone aligns with the radial styloid process (at the wrist).
Which side (left or right) is the anterior or posterior view?
Left: anterior (smooth).
Right: posterior (not smooth).
Called?
Head of the femur bone!
