Hand and Wrist Flashcards
Where is the scaphoid located?
Anatomical snuffbox
Ulnar (Medial) border tendon
Extensor Pollicis Longus
2 tendons
Radial (Lateral) border tendon
- Extensor Pollicis Brevis
- Abductor Pollicis Longus
Anatomical Snuffbox Contents
- Radial Artery
- Radial Nerve
- Cephalic Vein
The most common fractured bone in the hand
Scaphoid bone
What trauma commonly fractured the scaphoid bone?
Falling on an outstrectched hand (FOOSH)
Complication of scaphoid bone fracture
Avascular necrosis (AVN)
How does AVN occur on the scaphoid bone?
Retrograde blood supply: blood supply entering from its distal end towards proximal end of the bone
- Fracture can cause blood supply to be “cut-off’ leading to AVN
What artery supply blood to the scaphoid bone?
Radial Artery
What braches of the radial artery supply blood to the scaphoid bone?
- Dorsal Scaphoid Branch: Proximal pole of scaphoid (80%)
- Palmar Scaphoid Branch: Distal pole of the scaphoid
What is an ‘occult’ fracture?
A broken bone that is not easily seen on an X-ray
Complication of an occult scaphoid fracture
OA of the wrist later in life
