Hamlet Flashcards

Q
Act 1, scene i
A
- Elsinore. A platform before the castle.
Bernardo relieves Francisco from his watch. Bernardo hears mysterious footsteps. Francisco leaves. Horatio and the other watchman, Marcellus, come. The two watchmen try to convince a skeptical Horatio that there is a ghost of the deceased King Hamlet. The Ghost appears, and Horatio is convinced. He believes its appearance means impending doom for Denmark, especially because Norway’s old King Fortinbras has a son who seeks to reconquer their lands. Horatio suggests that bringing young Hamlet to the ghost will make him speak.
