Act 1 Scene 1 summary
On a cold night in Denmark, guards at Elsinore Castle see the ghost of the late King Hamlet. They decide to inform Prince Hamlet, the king’s son.
Act 1 Scene 2 summary
King Claudius, Hamlet’s uncle, has married Queen Gertrude, Hamlet’s mother, shortly after the king’s death. Claudius tries to placate Hamlet, who is deeply mourning. Hamlet is bitter about the hasty marriage.
Act 1 Scene 3 summary
Laertes, leaving for France, warns his sister Ophelia not to fall for Hamlet’s affections. Their father, Polonius, echoes this advice.
Act 1 Scene 4/5 summary
The ghost reveals to Hamlet that Claudius murdered him by pouring poison in his ear. The ghost urges Hamlet to avenge his death. Hamlet swears secrecy to his friends Horatio and Marcellus.

Act 3 Scene 1 summary

Act 5 Scene 2 summary
