Halogens Flashcards
Describe the trend of electronegativity in halogens.
Halogens get less electronegative going down the group.
Describe and explain the trend of reactivity in halogens.
Get less reactive down the group. Bigger radius outweighs greater nuclear charge so not as much attraction for valence electrons.
Describe the states of fluorine, chlorine, bromine, and iodine at RT.
Fluorine - gas
Chlorine - gas
Bromine - liquid
Iodine - solid
Fill in the space:
A more reactive halogen can [ ] a less reactive halogen.
Displace.
Describe the appearances of F, Cl, Br, and I.
F - light yellow gas
Cl - Greenish-yellow gas
Br - reddish-brown liquid
I - Purple-black solid
Describe and explain the trend of acidity in hydrogen halides.
Gets more acid down the group because less reactive halides can give away H+ ions more readily.
Colour of silver iodide ppt
Pale yellow.
Colour of silver bromide ppt
Pale cream.
Colour of silver chloride ppt
White ppt.
What is bleach and how is it made?
An equal mixture of NaCl and NaClO, formed from the reaction of chlorine in a COLD alkali.
Describe what is meant by a disproportionation reaction.
Part of a compound is oxidised and part is reduced.
