Halogen compounds Flashcards
State and explain the relative ease of hydrolysis of acyl chlorides, alkyl chlorides and aryl chlorides.
Acyl chloride (easiest to hydrolyse) > alkyl chloride > aryl chloride
In acyl chloride, carbon in C-Cl is more electron deficient and it is also attached to an oxygen atom.
In alkyl chloride, C-Cl bond strengthened by positive inductive effect of alkyl group.
In aryl chloride, lone pair on Cl delocalised in benzene ring so C-Cl bond is stronger.
Suggest the relative ease of hydrolysis of acyl bromide, acyl chloride and alkyl chloride.
Acyl bromide (easiest to hydrolyse) > acyl chloride > alkyl chloride
In acyl bromide, C-Br is much weaker due to Br having a larger atomic radius.
In acyl chloride, carbon in C-Cl is more electron deficient and it is also attached to an oxygen atom.
In alkyl chloride, positive inductive effect of alkyl group strengthen C-Cl bond.
