Haloalkanes Flashcards
1
Q
What affects the rate of hydrolysis for haloalkanes(4)
A
- The strength of the C-Halide bond; decreases down the group. Weaker bond= quicker hydrolysis. Less energy needed to break bond
- Stability of the Haloalkane: tertiary> secondary> primary
- primary is slowest as it is less stable and involves one step mechanism compared to tertiary’s 2 step mechanism
2
Q
Mechanism for alkane to Haloalkane?
A
- Radical substitution
