what is hallux valgus?
A
deformity at the first metatarsophalangeal joint
characterised by medial deviation of first metatarsal and joint subluxation

what are the risk factors?
A
- female
- high heels
- narrow fitting footwear
- connective tissue disorder
- hyper mobility syndrome
- anatomical variants.

what are the clinical features?
A
- painful medial prominence
- postion and lateral deviation of hallux
- reduced ROM and crepitus suggests cartilage degeneration

what is the differential diagnosis?
A
- Gout
- septic arthritis
- Hallux rigidus
- osteoarthritis
- RA

Q
what investigations can be done?
A
radiograph imaging to asses hallux valgus

Q
how is it managed?
A
- analgesia
- advice on footwear
- orthosis if flat feet
- physiotherapy if needed
if QoL if severely impacted, there are a number of surgical options

Q
what are the complications of halux valgus?
A
- avascular necrosis
- non union
- displacement
- reduced ROM
Prognosis is variable and may progress rapidly
