characterised by medial deviation of first metatarsal and joint subluxation

  • female
  • high heels
  • narrow fitting footwear
  • connective tissue disorder
  • hyper mobility syndrome
  • anatomical variants.

what are the clinical features?

A
  • painful medial prominence
  • postion and lateral deviation of hallux
  • reduced ROM and crepitus suggests cartilage degeneration

A

radiograph imaging to asses hallux valgus

how is it managed?

A
  • analgesia
  • advice on footwear
  • orthosis if flat feet
  • physiotherapy if needed

if QoL if severely impacted, there are a number of surgical options

what are the complications of halux valgus?

A
  • avascular necrosis
  • non union
  • displacement
  • reduced ROM

Prognosis is variable and may progress rapidly
