Hallmarks of cancer Flashcards
What are the 8 hallmarks of cancer?
- Self-sufficiency in growth signals
- Insensitivity to anti-growth signals
- Evading apoptosis
- Limitless replicative potential
- Sustained angiogenesis
- Invasion/metastasis
- Deregulating cellular energetics
- Immune evasion
What mediates self-sufficiency in growth signals in cancer cells?
- Receptor overexpression
- Oncogenic mutation
What mediates insensitivity to anti-growth signals?
Loss of tumor supressor genes
How can cancer cells evade apoptosis?
Favouring anti-apoptotic factors over pro-apoptotic factors
How can cancer cells replicate indefinitely?
Replicating problem -> telomeres shorten -> in cancer cells telomerase activity is upregulated
How do cancer cells achieve more angiogenesis/vascularization?
By releasing pro-angiogenic factors
How does invasion/metastasis happen?
Through the epithelial-mesenchymal transition
How do cancer cells deregulate energetics/metabolism?
Cancer cells make use of glycolysis, including an increased uptake of glucose and glutamine. They need less oxygen. anaerobic glycolysis, this leads to increased lactase secretion.
How do cancer cells evade the immune system?
They escape immune detection by secretion of immunosuppressive factors.
