Regulatory, Personal, Imaginative, Interactional, Instrumental, Representational, Heuristic
Instrumental
Language used to fulfil a need on the part of the speaker.
Usually to obtain food or drink.
‘ want juice’.
Regulatory
Language used to influence the behaviour of others by persuading/ commanding/ requesting.
‘put down!’.
Interactional
Language used to develop social relationships.
Concerned with the phatic dimension of talk.
‘Night, love you’.
Personal
Language is used to express a personal preference and identity.
Here I am function.
‘me like that’.
Representational
Language used to exchange information.
Relaying or requesting information.
‘Mummy’.
Heuristic
Language to learn and explore the environment.
Question and answer or running commentary.
‘Why?’.
Imaginative
Language used to explore the imagination.
May accompany play or arise from storytelling.
‘I’m Superman’.
