Halide Ions Testing Flashcards

1
Q

How do you test for halide ions?

A

A. Fill test tube to depth of about 2cm with one of solutions containing halide ions (CI, Br or I ions)
B. Add few drops of dilute nitric acid the shake test tube to mix contents
C. Add few drops of silver nitrate solution. Record colour of precipitate produced.
D. Repeat steps A-C with other known solutions that contain halide ions.

Precipitate = solid formed from two solutions

Q

How do you test for sulfate ions?

A

E. Fill test tube to depth around 2cm with solution containing sulfate ions, SO4(subscript) 2-(superscript)
F. Add few drops of dilute hydrochloric acid then shake test tube to mix contents
G. Add few drops of barium chloride solution. Record colour of precipitate produced.

How do you test for carbonate ions?

A

H. Fill test tube to depth of about 2cm with solution containing carbonate ions, CO3(subscript)2-(superscript)
I. Add few drops of dilute nitric acid or dilute hydrochloric acid. Record whether bubbling occurs (carbon dioxide produced)
