Halide Ions Flashcards

1
Q

Testing for Halide Ions?

A

Add Silver nitrate solution

If necessary, adding ammonium : AgCl and AgBr form soluble complex, colourless, AgI forms INSOLUBLE complex, remains yellow

Q

Chlorine + Water (disproportionation reaction, and its uses, and in sunlight?)

A
  • Chloric acid sterilises water, killing bacteria (healthy benefits by killing bacteria outweigh possible health risks)

In sunlight :
2Cl2 (g) + 2H2O (l) → 4HCl (aq) + O2 (g)

(which is why Cl in swimming pools need to be replenished regularly)
