Halide Ions Flashcards
1
Q
Testing for Halide Ions?
A
Add Silver nitrate solution
If necessary, adding ammonium : AgCl and AgBr form soluble complex, colourless, AgI forms INSOLUBLE complex, remains yellow
2
Q
Reactions of Halide Ions with Concentrated H2SO4
A
3
Q
Chlorine + NaOH (cold dilute, and a disproportionation reaction)
A
4
Q
Chlorine + Water (disproportionation reaction, and its uses, and in sunlight?)
A
- Chloric acid sterilises water, killing bacteria (healthy benefits by killing bacteria outweigh possible health risks)
In sunlight :
2Cl2 (g) + 2H2O (l) → 4HCl (aq) + O2 (g)
(which is why Cl in swimming pools need to be replenished regularly)
