- Major exports (e.g. mangoes and coffee) fell, factories closed and tourism significantly decreased
- Important clothing factories, which provided over 60% of Haiti’s exports, were also severely damaged, therefore 20% of jobs were lost
- However, even before the Haiti earthquake, the economy was already in reverse and unemployment was almost 70%

- The government and police force had collapsed, leading to looting and crime to increase
- The UN then sent 3,500 troops and 4,000 American personnel were sent to establish law and order
