Hair restoration Flashcards
How is male pattern baldness typically classified?
On the Hamilton-Norwood system/scale
How is female pattern hair loss graded?
On the Ludwig and Olsen system/scale
What is donor dominance?
It is the idea that grafts taken from an area that is not affected by alopecia (the occiput) will continue to display resistance to androgenetic alopecia when transplanted elsewhere
What site are hair grafts usually taken from?
The occipital scalp (usually spared in androgenetic alopeicia)
What density of hair transplant is needed for an area to look natural?
25 units/cm2
What are the two main methods of hair transplantation?
Strip (elliptical) excision and follicular unit extraction
What is the maximum size possible with strip excision for hair transplantation?
30cm
What is the approximate density needed in the donor strip from the occipital scalp for a strip excision hair transplant to be effective?
~100 follicular units/cm2
What is the follicular unit extraction technique for hair transplantation?
Punch removal of follicular units is done w/ manual, motorized, or robotic tools to then be placed elsewhere
What are some advantages of follicular unit extraction?
Less visible scarring (no linear scar on the occiput)
How many hair shafts are in a follicular unit?
2-3
Which patients are good candidates for follicular unit extraction method of hair transplantation?
Those with short hair, risk of scarring/keloids if strip excision is performed, and younger patients
What is post-transplant telogen effluvium and when does it occur?
Just telogen effluvium that occurs 2-3 weeks after transplant and self resolves
When does new hair growth occur after a hair transplant?
10-20 weeks, but overall apparent effect = 6-9 months
What age range is more preferable for hair transplantation?
Age >25 yrs is more preferable than younger pts
